An Open Letter to Small Business Owners

Written by Lisa Toban | May 1, 2026

If you’re building a business right now, this is for you.

Not the polished version of you. Not the version that has everything figured out. The version that is actively in it—making decisions, adjusting direction, trying to hold everything together while still moving forward.

Because that’s where most businesses actually exist.

Not in perfect systems. Not in perfect launches. Not in perfectly executed marketing plans.

But in the middle of figuring it out.

You’re Carrying More Than People Realize

There’s a part of running a business that isn’t always visible.

You’re not just delivering your service or selling your product. You’re making decisions constantly:

  • What to prioritize
  • What to invest in
  • What to change
  • What to keep going, even when it’s unclear

You’re thinking about growth, sustainability, consistency, visibility, and direction—often at the same time.

And while marketing advice often focuses on what to do, it doesn’t always acknowledge what you’re already managing.

So when things feel heavy, it’s not always because you’re doing something wrong.

It’s often because you’re doing a lot—without enough structure to support it.

You Don’t Need to Do Everything to Move Forward

There’s a pressure in business to feel like you need to be everywhere.

Every platform. Every strategy. Every opportunity. Every new approach that promises better results.

But trying to do everything at once usually creates more friction than progress.

What actually moves things forward is simpler:

  • Clear direction
  • Focused effort
  • Consistent action over time

You don’t need a perfect system to start. You need something stable enough to build on.

Something you can return to when things feel unclear.

Something that doesn’t require you to constantly start over.

Progress in business rarely comes from doing more.

It comes from doing the right things consistently enough for them to build.

What You’re Building Takes Time to Become Visible

One of the hardest parts of running a business is that not everything shows up immediately.

You can be doing the work—showing up, refining your message, improving your offers—and still feel like things are moving slowly.

That doesn’t always mean something is wrong.

It often means you’re in the phase where things are still taking shape.

Marketing, especially, works this way.

Clarity builds over time. Recognition builds over time. Trust builds over time.

There isn’t always an immediate return for the effort you’re putting in right now.

But that doesn’t mean the effort isn’t working.

It means the results are still forming.

You’re Allowed to Build This in a Way That Works for You

There’s no single way to run a business.

No single way to market it. No single way to grow it.

What matters is that what you’re building actually works for your capacity, your direction, and the kind of business you want to sustain.

You don’t need to rush to match someone else’s pace.

You don’t need to adopt every strategy you see.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you move forward.

You need clarity where it matters, structure where it helps, and enough consistency to keep going.

So if things feel unclear, or slow, or heavier than expected—it doesn’t mean you’re off track.

It means you’re in the process of building something real.

And that process isn’t always visible.

But it’s still progress.
